Local park pavilion in Shoreham to be transformed with modern facilities

Released: Tuesday, 21 November 2023

Shoreham's Buckingham Park sports pavilion is to be transformed into a modern facility for the community.

The building, which is used by Shoreham RFC and others on a pay and play basis, lets down the rest of the park aesthetically but also fails to meet the needs of its users. The toilet facilities are of a poor standard and the building itself needs constant maintenance due to its age, at significant cost to the council.

We've been working with various sporting groups over several years to find a suitable solution that benefits all those who use the pavilion while being good value.

The approach agreed upon is to completely replace the existing building to provide new, modern toilets and sports facilities including changing rooms and a larger café.

The new design will also include storage for sports equipment, removing the need for shipping containers elsewhere in the park.

Whilst providing improved facilities for Buckingham Park and its users, the new building will be designed to fit in with the rest of the park and have a traditional pitched roof, as well as being vandal-proof.

The project will now go to the design phase. Council officers will work with members to create a design for the new pavilion that will meet the needs of its users and create a pleasant, functional new building for the park.

Cllr Emma Evans, Adur's cabinet member for the environment and leisure, said:

“Buckingham Park is a treasured green space for residents of Shoreham and beyond.

“The pavilion there is in urgent need of an upgrade and through this project we can provide a new, modern space that is pleasing to the eye and provides its users with fantastic facilities.”
